Data Transfer Methods

As people upgrade their computer systems and their versions of the Cabnetware program, there are questions asked about what is the best method to transfer user data to the new setup. Here are a few scenarios and routines to consider.

1) A new version of Cabnetware installed on an existing computer that already has a version of Cabnetware?

Use the Migrate Utility. This works well providing you are going between similar styles of program, i.e., Frame Ultimate to Frame Ultimate.

Read about the Migrate Utility in Help. It is valid when used from all versions of CW since V 8.0.

2) A Cabnetware program installed on a new computer that has no previous working version of Cabnetware installed?

Use the System Backup/Restore utility. This works well providing you are going between similar styles of program. i.e., Frame Ultimate to Frame Ultimate.

Read about the System Backup/Restore utility in Help. It is valid when used from all versions of CW since V 8.0. A few things to be aware of are to click the Show All radio button to show the Backup from any user and to try backing up in phases, meaning, not everything at all once (jobs in particular), so as to not overload the process.

Here is a link to a tech tip done a while back on Backup/Restore.

3) Moving data from one computer to another that already has Cabnetware installed?

Use the System Backup/Restore utility. Migrate doesn’t work between networked computers.

4) Can’t figure out Backup/Restore or it doesn’t work? If you can’t figure out how Backup/Restore works you probably can’t figure out this method either, but, occasionally the Utility just doesn’t work, so another way some people get a new version merged with their old data on a new computer is to simply copy the entire Planit folder to a thumb drive and paste it on the new computer’s C:\ drive. Then install or reinstall the Cabnetware program. This works well presuming the copied data is from the default path structure, and you install the program to the default location and you use the same version on both computers.

This method can copy many unwanted files, particularly if you have multiple previous versions on the old computer. In that case you might just copy the specific program versions folder and paste it into a C:\Planit folder you create on the new computer. For example copy Cabware_8_3 to C:\Planit\. Rename it to Cabware_9_0. Then when you install Cabnetware V 9.01, it should be good to go after you change the paths to reference Cabware_9_0 locations.
